Centennial Canoe is proud to team up with History Colorado on an exciting canoe trip to a wild and remote area with fascinating history.  Join our host, Ft. Lewis College professor of Southwest Studies and historian, Dr. Andrew Gulliford, as he leads you through the spectacular canyon country of the Colorado plateau, including Ruby and Horsethief Canyons.  Dr. Gulliford, will facilitate discussions on the history and geography of the canyons of the Colorado Plateau. Explore how the combination of people, activities and environment molded a distinct regional character and identity. Dr. Gulliford will share his stories of the colorful characters and circumstances that helped shape the western landscape as you journey along the river. There’ll be plenty of campfire stories on this trip!

Our route features majestic walls of red sandstone and offers some of the best canoeing in Colorado.  The river is gentle, with occasional small Class 1+ rapids to add spice to the journey.  Camping along the river’s banks by the campfire will surely be awe-inspiring! You’ll be amazed at stands of shiny granite sculpted by water through the ages while paddling or floating in your life jacket past the remnants of ancient metamorphic rock, called Black Rock. Camping along the river’s banks and exploring a deep box canyon will leave you awed by the immensity of geologic time and the silence of the wilderness. This is BIG COUNTRY and a geologist’s paradise. Many of our educational classes focus on this area. This stretch of river near Grand Junction, CO, is ideal for canoeing. The Colorado River canoe trip is 26 miles.

You may also want to visit the temporary location of the Ute Indian Museum collections and gift shop at the Montrose Visitor Center in nearby Montrose, CO.  Their main museum facility is being rebuilt.  Another historical landmark worth seeing is the Fort Uncompahgre Living History Museum, located in Delta, CO, at Confluence Park, right on the nearby Gunnison River.
