Employment

guides having fun Centennial actively recruits new guides in January and February each year.  This gives people coming on board in the spring plenty of time to acquire the necessary credentials to legally guide in Colorado, Utah and Wyoming.  Interviews are typically conducted by phone or in person.  It is also helpful if you’ve been recommended by a Centennial guide who endorses you or if you’ve already taken one of our trips.  We prefer mature adults who are able to interact with other adults and have a solid work ethic.

No experience is necessary to become a river guide. In fact, many of our guides are former customers of Centennial that have taken our trips, had a great time and want to become more involved. The primary criteria for guiding are to enjoy the outdoors and people.  You must be physically fit and at least 18 years of age with reliable transportation and a flexible summer schedule.

The required credentials to begin guiding are current First Aid and CPR training that is easily acquired thought the Red Cross or American Lung Association. Required gear is tent, sleeping bag, mattress pad and camp chair. All other equipment is provided by Centennial Canoe, e.g., dry bag, canoe, paddle, PFD’s, etc.

All guides start out as trainees usually for about 7 or 8 trips or the equivalent of 250 river miles. This means you are unpaid and not “officially” part of the trip guide staff until being promoted to assistant guide. However, you will share in the guide tips. Your training and food are free in exchange for helping out on the trip. This training period varies depending on how much prior experience you have and your eagerness to learn. Centennial guides are very helpful and want to see you succeed. The trainee period is a time when you have fun learning.

Reasonably-priced two-day (weekends) guide and trainee courses are offered each April and May. We also have a 3-day guide and trainee trip on one of the rivers we paddle to familiarize yourself with the river.
