This is a fund raising trip for the Rock Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (Rock CF). Your canoe trip hostess will be Emily Schaller. You can learn more about Emily by visiting www.letsrockcf.org
Today Emily’s battle against this deadly genetic disease is printed in magazines and posted on websites, her greatest victories are raising $150,000 for cystic fibrosis research and securing a sponsorship of $20,000 from New York-based Spin magazine for Rock CF Foundation’s annual benefit concert. Emily teaches parents, patients and audiences in the CF world about the effects of cystic fibrosis and improvements being made to the treatments. Emily has ran over 300 miles and biked over 700 miles and ridden 282 miles from Detroit to Chicago to keep healthy and raise funds for Rock CF. She organizes a annual “Just Let Me Breathe” (JLMB) rock ‘n roll benefit concert. To date the JLMB concert series has raised over $60,000. It’s plain to see, Emily is positive in her crusade. “ I am inspired and motivated to keep plugging away because I know for a fact that the money we raise is indeed helping to improve the lives of cystic fibrosis patients.“
A message from Emily…
I am extremely excited to host the “Rock CF S’more Tasting and Sing Along” canoe trip with Centennial Canoe Outfitters (CCO). Last summer I was lucky enough to go on a 3-day canoe trip with CCO and it was the most fun I’ve had in years! Before leaving the trip I had a lot of planning to do figuring out how I could do all of my breathing treatments, keep my refrigerated meds chilled and get all the calories and fluids I needed to maintain my health. After talking with my CF care center I set up a plan and made it happen. My guides were very accommodating with storing my meds in coolers but the rest was my responsibility. Because it is a canoeing and camping trip out in a remote back country area, it does require some strength and endurance to make everything happen. Paddling, carrying your dry bag full of clothes and meds and helping out with other lifting is all a part of the trip. Some people (CF or not) may not be able to handle the rigors of this trip, so think about your physical ability before deciding if you want to join us for three days of fun! I hope to see you on the river, rocking CF the whole way!!
Rock CF,
Emily”
Because of health risks to people with Cystic Fibrosis, as a policy of the Rock CF Foundation, individuals with CF who have had a positive sputum culture for Burkholderia cepacia complex (B. cepacia) shall not attend this event or other events sponsored by the Rock CF Foundation.

This is what canoeing in Colorado is all about! Your canoe trip will cover a 30-mile stretch of spectacular canyon country northwest of Vail, CO. A stunning landscape of pine trees and multi-colored sandstone formations with some volcanic intrusions line this exciting section of river that lies just 155 miles from Denver, CO. The Bull Gulch Wilderness Study Area borders the river and provides excellent trout fishing. So don’t forget your fishing rod (Colorado fishing license is required). You’ll find yourself camping in forested areas along the river. After your canoe trip, you might also consider a relaxing visit to Glenwood Springs and their natural hot mineral springs pool and vapor caves, located just 19 miles to the west.
This section of the Colorado River features several Class II-III rapids mixed with flat water (Class I is easy and Class V is difficult). At least one experienced paddler per boat is recommended; children should be 13 years of age or older. Colorado River canoeing also provides opportunities to “tether and float” your boat alongside the few, short Class III rapids.

This Utah canoe trip is an unforgettable odyssey. Paddling the spectacular 60-mile section of the Green River from Crystal Geyser south of Green River, UT, as it winds towards Mineral Bottom, just north of Canyonlands National Park, is the trip of a lifetime. Between the town of Green River, Utah, and Canyonlands National Park is part of the longest stretch of quiet wilderness water in the lower 48 states. As you canoe the Green River, the moving panorama is incomparable. The twisting, looping river winds its way between sheer, colorful sandstone walls, hundreds of feet high. Vast canyon systems and water channels branch in all directions, inviting hiking and exploring as well as providing excellent camping. Highlights may include hiking to Bow Knot Bend, the canyons of Trin-Alcove, plus Horseshoe Canyon. Old settler’s cabins, abandoned mines, historic outlaw hideouts, caves, ancient Fremont Indian petroglyphs (rock art panels a.d. 500-1200), and lush hidden springs await those who pass this way. Oftentimes, a layover day will be built into the trip for hiking. As you retrace Major John Wesley Powell’s 1869 route when he first floated this river and documented the area, remember his words describing his mission: “...to fill in the last white space on the map…”
The trip will begin in Moab, UT, where a local tour operator will transport passengers to the Green River entry point. Cars can be stored with the operator at no charge.
Special Information
Centennial teams up with the Colorado School of Mines (303-273-3303) to offer a geology class for teachers (K-12) and for general interest to the public. Sometimes it’s nice not having to deal with the opposite gender for a couple of days. Imagine a weekend with no cell phones or makeup and waking up to the sound of the water. Get a group of your girlfriends together and join our yearly Women’s Retreat, aka “Floating Women’s Convention” for women only and make new friends or catch up with old ones!
Colorado canoeing on the Gunnison River will spark your sense of adventure with opportunities for hiking and exploring, floating in your lifejacket and camping along the river’s edge. During this Colorado canoe trip, you will be dwarfed by high walls of red sandstone and shale deposited during the age of the dinosaurs. These canyons in the Colorado Plateau are truly magnificent and not soon forgotten. Massive cottonwoods stand on many river bends supporting the huge nests of blue herons, hawks and eagles. You may hike into Dominguez Canyon, Colorado’s newest designated Wilderness Area, one of the most beautiful stops on the river. Hiking into the canyon will reveal deep, cool swimming holes, waterfalls and many ancient Indian petroglyphs (rock art panels). 1-day trips are 15 miles, 2 and 3-day trips are 31 miles, and 4 or 5-day trips are 42 miles. Trip Overview

Join renowned Colorado historian, Professor Andrew Gulliford, while exploring the canyons of the Colorado Plateau by canoe and discussing its history and geography. Andrew will reveal the little known cowboy history of the Escalante and Dominguez Canyon areas and the colorful characters that helped shape the Grand Junction and Delta landscapes. The region’s first inhabitants, Spanish explorations, mineral booms and busts, farming and ranching, and twentieth century economic activities such as tourism and defense industries all contributed to this area. Explore how this combination of people, activities and environment helped create a distinct regional character and identity. There will be many fascinating western tales told around the campfire on this trip!
This spectacular canyon country of the Colorado Plateau, including Ruby and Horsethief Canyons, features majestic walls of red sandstone and offers some of the best Colorado canoeing and Colorado sea kayaking. The river is gentle with occasional small Class I+ rapids to add spice to the journey (Class I is easy and Class V is difficult). Roads do not bound this portion of the river and the steep-walled canyons are accessible only from the river, giving the area a true wilderness setting.
You’ll be amazed at stands of shiny granite sculpted by water through the ages while paddling or floating in your life jacket past the remnants of ancient metamorphic rock, called Black Rock. Camping along the river’s banks and exploring a deep box canyon will leave you awed by the immensity of geologic time and the silence of the wilderness. This is BIG COUNTRY and a geologist’s paradise. Many of our educational classes focus on this area. This stretch of river near Grand Junction, CO, can accommodate either a canoe trip or sea kayak trip.

Small Potatoes is Jacquie Manning and Rich Prezioso. This Chicago-based duo has been touring on the folk circuit since 1993 and in that time they’ve become sought-after regulars at many clubs and coffeehouses across the U.S. They have made repeat appearances at major folk festivals, including the Kerrville Folk Festival, the Walnut Valley Folk Festival, and Philadelphia Folk Festival. They were one of the “most requested” acts at the 1999 Falcon Ridge New Artist Showcase. Jacquie is also a past winner of the Kerrville New Folk Songwriting Contest.
They call themselves eclecto-maniacs. They describe their music as “Celtic to Cowboy” and say it has taken them “years of careful indecision” to come up with a mix of music that ranges from country, blues, and swing to Irish, with songwriting that touches on all of those styles and more. Their four recordings, “Alive!”, “Waltz of the Wallflowers”, “Time Flies”, and “Raw” cover all these styles. They both sing, they both play guitars and an array of other instruments. They even yodel. Dirty Linen Magazine called them “one of the most polished, inventive, and entertaining shows on the circuit.” Sing Out Magazine called them “wonderfully eclectic” and said “Small Potatoes might well be leading mainstays on the folk scene for years to come.”

Trip Overview
The Dolores River is a beautiful back-country river tucked away from normal travel in extreme western Colorado, approximately 50 miles southwest of Grand Junction, CO. Beginning at the confluence of the San Miguel and Dolores Rivers and winding up in Gateway, CO, this 30-mile section lies almost untouched by boaters. This Colorado canoe trip is the most suitable stretch for open canoes and consists of quiet water interspersed with rapids up to Class II and III in difficulty. The natural setting is spectacular with the river framed by massive red sandstone cliffs, hundreds of feet high. The scenery will test your photography skills because the vistas are magnificent!
This remote area is steeped in local western history. The canyon was an escape route and hideout for Butch Cassidy and his Hole in the Wall Gang after robbing the Telluride bank in 1889. You’ll also see a large abandoned mining flume built in the 1890’s hanging suspended high above the river on the canyon walls.
The Dolores River is recommended for those who are looking for adventure and a more challenging paddle. At least one experienced paddler per canoe is suggested; children should be 13 years of age or older. We will also be paddling with near-empty canoes which is very beneficial when negotiating the rapids of the Dolores. You will leave personal gear like clothes, tents, sleeping bags, coolers, etc., in your vehicle. Each morning we will shuttle the cars to the next riverside campsite.

Trip Overview
San Juan Island sea kayaking has over 200 rocky, forested islands to explore, the San Juan Archipelago in Washington state, just south of the Canadian border, and is a superb kayak destination. You’ll experience the fun of paddling and camping on remote islands accessible only by boat! Harking back to an earlier time, the islands were used by the native Lummi and Swinomish tribes as summer fishing camps. The pristine waters of the San Juan and Gulf Islands are host to over 80 resident Orca whales. Other wildlife sightings may include minke whales, Dall’s porpoises, seals and eagles.
The San Juan Islands are home to an eclectic mix of artists, industry, and tourism. The beautiful environment, temperate weather and fascinating variety of marine mammals and bird species all add to the allure of the islands. Stepping off the ferry in Friday Harbor, you instantly feel the age of this ancient rock; it really is a different world. Islanders have a deep appreciation for the environment. This connection to the land and water echoes of times past, but not forgotten.
Your San Juan Island sea kayaking trip will include top quality sea kayak equipment, experienced naturalist guides and mouth-watering cuisine. We invite you to join us in San Juan Island kayaking. Price does not include airfare, ferry transportation to Friday Harbor or pre-trip lodging.

Trip Overview

Take a huge step into the geologic past and marvel at a landscape created over 260 million years ago when dinosaurs, not “cowboys,” roamed the Wild West. Many of our geology trips travel through the Colorado Plateau which encompasses a 4-state region. Geologists travel from all over the world to visit these magnificent rock formations. Centennial will provide a geology expert on these trips, available to answer your questions and explain how the canyons got there. Learn while you have fun!
So canoe in Colorado on the Gunnison River with us! Read an article in the Durango Herald Newspaper about the Wilderness designation of the Escalante-Dominguez area on this river: Wild Idea
Special Information
Centennial teams up with the Colorado School of Mines (303-273-3303) to offer a geology class for teachers (K-12) and for general interest to the public. This combined one-day class session and 3-day canoe trip earns 2 continuing ed credits for teachers. The pretrip class for students will be at the CO School of Mines in Golden, CO, from 9 am to 4:30 pm, on Wednesday, June 23, 2010. Former participants in level I of this class can qualify for Level II credit by completing a special project to be determined by the instructor and conducted concurrently with the basic class offering. Non teachers may take the full course for the student price and have a reserved seat. Noncredit seats, for the canoe trip only (at regular canoe trip prices), are based on space availability. Ages 15 and up.
Bob Dickerson, Geologist with SM Stroller Corp., will be the instructor on this trip. While on the river and while hiking, he will be conducting labs and lecturing. Bob has over 30 years of professional experience as a geologist, researcher and teacher in resource exploration, basic geologic research, environmental remediation, groundwater studies, and geologic modeling. He has published 66 articles, maps, and abstracts, and has received the USGS “Outstanding Performance Award.”

Trip Overview

Learn about the prehistoric people and past civilizations who lived along the rivers of the Colorado Plateau. Locate, examine, and interpret the rock art and structures they left behind.

When you canoe Utah, you won’t soon forget it. The White River, flowing westward 34 miles from Bonanza, Utah, near the Colorado and Utah border, has been referred to as the best canoeing in Utah. It is certainly the most remote wilderness area of any flat-water river stretch in the West. Few boaters have discovered the wild and secluded beauty of a Utah canoe trip through the White River Canyon. Wildlife abounds, including wild horse herds, antelope, deer and beaver. Fantastic hiking awaits you at the unusual geologic formations of Goblin City. Before or after your trip, you may wish to hike into Fantasy Canyon or Devil’s Playground, featuring other unique rock formations. The water on the White River is generally smooth with occasional rapids up to Class I in difficulty. Excellent camping is found in the cottonwood groves along the river.

Centennial partners with the University of Northern Colorado (UNC) and Professor Dr. James Dunn (970-351-2834; Email Dr. Dunn), for a 3-credit Geography course on the river. Credit classes include classroom sessions and are not discounted.
Learn about the power of water, wind, and weathering in a western environment. Explore all the exciting activity surrounding a moving river through geographic field exercises and developing a research plan as you explore the dramatic canyons and paddle the rivers. You will also be conducting scientific research for the Bureau of Land Management Salt Cedar Invasion Project.

Trip Overview

Trip Overview

Our two-person sea kayaks are 16-feet long and are very comfortable and stable. Sleeker than a canoe, they will also travel faster. The only thing you’ll need to carry in your kayak is a camera and water bottle. All of your camping and personal gear will be transported down river on the support raft.
Our sea kayak trip from either Loma or Fruita, Colorado (about 13 miles west of Grand Junction, Colorado), covers a 30-mile stretch of the Colorado River to Westwater, Utah. Trip Overview
