Trip Overview

This spectacular canyon country of the Colorado Plateau, including Ruby and Horsethief Canyons, features majestic walls of red sandstone and offers some of the best Colorado canoeing and Colorado sea kayaking. The river is gentle with occasional small Class I+ rapids to add spice to the journey (Class I is easy and Class V is difficult). Roads do not bound this portion of the river and the steep-walled canyons are accessible only from the river, giving the area a true wilderness setting.

You’ll be amazed at stands of shiny granite sculpted by water through the ages while paddling or floating in your life jacket past the remnants of ancient metamorphic rock, called Black Rock. Camping along the river’s banks, exploring a natural amphitheater with ancient Indian rock art or hiking into deep box canyons will leave you awed by the immensity of geologic time and the silence of the wilderness. This is BIG COUNTRY and a geologist’s paradise. Many of our educational classes focus on this area. This stretch of river near Grand Junction, CO, can accommodate either a canoe trip or sea kayak trip.

Trip Overview

When you canoe Utah, you won’t soon forget it. The White River, flowing westward 34 miles from Bonanza, Utah, near the Colorado and Utah border, has been referred to as the best canoeing in Utah. It is certainly the most remote wilderness area of any flat-water river stretch in the West. Few boaters have discovered the wild and secluded beauty of a Utah canoe trip through the White River Canyon. Wildlife abounds, including wild horse herds, antelope, deer and beaver. Fantastic hiking awaits you at the unusual geologic formations of Goblin City. Before or after your trip, you may wish to hike into Fantasy Canyon or Devil’s Playground, featuring other unique rock formations. The water on the White River is generally smooth with occasional rapids up to Class I in difficulty. Excellent camping is found in the cottonwood groves along the river.

Music & Storytelling

Music has always played an important roll in the 24-year history of Centennial Canoe Outfitters.  The sounds of guitars under the stars and the crackle of the campfire seem to be magical. Plus, our guests have always been encouraged to join in the sing-a-longs or bring their favorite instrument.

Colorado canoeing on the Gunnison River will spark your sense of adventure with opportunities for hiking and exploring, floating in your lifejacket and camping along the river’s edge. During this Colorado canoe trip, you will be dwarfed by high walls of red sandstone and shale deposited during the age of the dinosaurs.  These canyons in the Colorado Plateau are truly magnificent and not soon forgotten. Massive cottonwoods stand on many river bends supporting the huge nests of blue herons, hawks and eagles. You may hike into Dominguez Canyon, Colorado’s newest designated Wilderness Area, one of the most beautiful stops on the river. Hiking into the canyon will reveal deep, cool swimming holes, waterfalls and many ancient Indian petroglyphs (rock art panels). 1-day trips are 15 miles, 2 and 3-day trips are 31 miles, and 4 or 5-day trips are 42 miles. So canoe in Colorado on the Gunnison River with us!

Trip Overview

Sea Kayaking in Colorado

Our two-person sea kayaks are 16-feet long and are very comfortable and stable. Sleeker than a canoe, they will also travel faster. The only thing you’ll need to carry in your kayak is a camera and water bottle. All of your camping and personal gear will be transported down river on the support raft.

Our sea kayak trip from either Loma or Fruita, Colorado (about 13 miles west of Grand Junction, Colorado), covers a 30-mile stretch of the Colorado River to Westwater, Utah. This spectacular canyon country of the Colorado Plateau, including Ruby and Horsethief Canyons, features majestic walls of red sandstone and offers some of the best paddling in Colorado. The river is gentle with occasional small Class I+ rapids to add spice to the journey. Roads do not bound this portion of the river and the steep-walled canyons are accessible only from the river, giving the area a true wilderness setting. This stretch of river can easily be navigated in a sea kayak.

You’ll be amazed at stands of shiny granite sculpted by water through the ages while paddling or floating in your lifejacket past the remnants of ancient metamorphic rock called Black Rock.

Trip Overview

Join renowned Colorado historian, Professor Andrew Gulliford, while exploring the canyons of the Colorado Plateau by canoe and discussing its history and geography. Andrew will reveal the little known cowboy history of the Escalante and Dominguez Canyon areas and the colorful characters that helped shape the Grand Junction and Delta landscapes. The region’s first inhabitants, Spanish explorations, mineral booms and busts, farming and ranching, and twentieth century economic activities such as tourism and defense industries all contributed to this area. Explore how this combination of people, activities and environment helped create a distinct regional character and identity. There will be many fascinating western tales told around the campfire on this trip!

Wine Tasting

This trip pairs some of Colorado’s finest wines and scenery. Plum Creek Winery in Palisade, Colorado, will co-sponsor and help facilitate this delightful weekend of wine tasting and education. Plum Creek is Colorado’s most award-winning winery and has received over 325 awards. They continue to excel in international, national and regional competition. During Happy Hour and the evening meal, they will feature their favorites and provide insight into the Colorado wine industry, different grapes and the making of wine, how to correctly taste wine and successfully pair it with food, and how its antioxidants are good for you.  Adults only.

Trip Overview

This is what canoeing in Colorado is all about! Your canoe trip will cover a 30-mile stretch of spectacular canyon country northwest of Vail, CO. A stunning landscape of pine trees and multi-colored sandstone formations with some volcanic intrusions line this exciting section of river that lies just 155 miles from Denver, CO. The Bull Gulch Wilderness Study Area borders the river and provides excellent trout fishing. So don’t forget your fishing rod (Colorado fishing license is required). You’ll find yourself camping in forested areas along the river. After your canoe trip, you might also consider a relaxing visit to Glenwood Springs and their natural hot mineral springs pool and vapor caves, located just 19 miles to the west.

This section of the Colorado River features several Class II-III rapids mixed with flat water (Class I is easy and Class V is difficult).  At least one experienced paddler per boat is recommended; children should be 13 years of age or older. Colorado River canoeing also provides opportunities to “tether and float” your boat alongside the few, short Class III rapids.

Trip Overview

Music & Storytelling

Music has always played an important roll in the 24-year history of Centennial Canoe Outfitters.  The sounds of guitars under the stars and the crackle of the campfire seem to be magical. Plus, our guests have always been encouraged to join in the sing-a-longs or bring their favorite instrument.

This Utah canoe trip is an unforgettable odyssey. Paddling the spectacular 60-mile section of the Green River from Crystal Geyser south of Green River, UT, as it winds towards Mineral Bottom, just north of Canyonlands National Park, is the trip of a lifetime. Between the town of Green River, Utah, and Canyonlands National Park is part of the longest stretch of quiet wilderness water in the lower 48 states. As you canoe the Green River, the moving panorama is incomparable. The twisting, looping river winds its way between sheer, colorful sandstone walls, hundreds of feet high. Vast canyon systems and water channels branch in all directions, inviting hiking and exploring as well as providing excellent camping. Highlights may include hiking to Bow Knot Bend, the canyons of Trin-Alcove, plus Horseshoe Canyon. Old settler’s cabins, abandoned mines, historic outlaw hideouts, caves, ancient Fremont Indian petroglyphs (rock art panels a.d. 500-1200), and lush hidden springs await those who pass this way. Oftentimes, a layover day will be built into the trip for hiking. As you retrace Major John Wesley Powell’s 1869 route when he first floated this river and documented the area, remember his words describing his mission: “...to fill in the last white space on the map...”

The trip will begin in Moab, UT, where a local tour operator will transport passengers to the Green River entry point. Cars can be stored with the operator at no charge.

Special Information

Small Potatoes is Jacquie Manning and Rich Prezioso.  This Chicago-based duo has been touring on the folk circuit since 1993 and in that time they’ve become sought-after regulars at many clubs and coffeehouses across the U.S.  They have made repeat appearances at major folk festivals, including the Kerrville Folk Festival, the Walnut Valley Folk Festival, and Philadelphia Folk Festival. They were one of the “most requested” acts at the 1999 Falcon Ridge New Artist Showcase.  Jacquie is also a past winner of the Kerrville New Folk Songwriting Contest.

They call themselves eclecto-maniacs.  They describe their music as “Celtic to Cowboy” and say it has taken them “years of careful indecision” to come up with a mix of music that ranges from country, blues, and swing to Irish, with songwriting that touches on all of those styles and more.  Their four recordings, “Alive!”, “Waltz of the Wallflowers”, “Time Flies”, and “Raw” cover all these styles.  They both sing, they both play guitars and an array of other instruments.  They even yodel.  Dirty Linen Magazine called them “one of the most polished, inventive, and entertaining shows on the circuit.” Sing Out Magazine called them “wonderfully eclectic” and said “Small Potatoes might well be leading mainstays on the folk scene for years to come.”

Geology

Take a huge step into the geologic past and marvel at a landscape created over 260 million years ago when dinosaurs, not “cowboys,” roamed the Wild West. Many of our geology trips travel through the Colorado Plateau which encompasses a 4-state region. Geologists travel from all over the world to visit these magnificent rock formations. Centennial will provide a geology expert on these trips, available to answer your questions and explain how the canyons got there. Learn while you have fun!

    Trip Overview

The Dolores River is a beautiful back-country river tucked away from normal travel in extreme western Colorado, approximately 50 miles southwest of Grand Junction, CO. Beginning at the confluence of the San Miguel and Dolores Rivers and winding up in Gateway, CO, this 30-mile section lies almost untouched by boaters. This Colorado canoe trip is the most suitable stretch for open canoes and consists of quiet water interspersed with rapids up to Class II and III in difficulty. The natural setting is spectacular with the river framed by massive red sandstone cliffs, hundreds of feet high. The scenery will test your photography skills because the vistas are magnificent!

This remote area is steeped in local western history. The canyon was an escape route and hideout for Butch Cassidy and his Hole in the Wall Gang after robbing the Telluride bank in 1889. You’ll also see a large abandoned mining flume built in the 1890’s hanging suspended high above the river on the canyon walls.

The Dolores River is recommended for those who are looking for adventure and a more challenging paddle. At least one experienced paddler per canoe is suggested; children should be 13 years of age or older. We will also be paddling with near-empty canoes which is very beneficial when negotiating the rapids of the Dolores. You will leave personal gear like clothes, tents, sleeping bags, coolers, etc., in your vehicle. Each morning we will shuttle the cars to the next riverside campsite.

    Trip Overview

This trip will be facilitated by a Denver Zoo representative with fun workshops and discussions.

    Trip Overview

Canoe Wyoming on the North Platte River near Saratoga, WY, through 33 miles of some of the most remote and varied scenery of any river we paddle. Large, spectacular bluffs and wide-open western vistas border this crystal clear river. Canoeing in Wyoming, you’ll find the wildlife plentiful. It is not uncommon to encounter deer, antelope, blue herons, Canadian geese, a flock of white pelicans and bald eagles in one mellow afternoon on the river. Fishermen will find this to be one of the best trout fishing streams in the West. So don’t forget to bring your fishing pole! (Wyoming fishing license required.)

The area is also rich in the romance of the Old West. You will cross the historic Overland Trail, the wagon trail to the West. In this wilderness area, even the wagon wheel ruts are still visible in the dirt. After hiking past pioneer rock art on the canyon walls, you’ll visit a pioneer graveyard on the overlying bluffs. One can only imagine how they died. The North Platte River is truly a trip back in western history!

In addition, the resort town of Saratoga, WY, is well known for its Hobo Hot Springs, which are open to the public at no charge.

    Special Information

    • This trip is co-sponsored by the Denver Museum of Nature & Science. Public is welcome.

        • This is a Denver Museum of Nature & Science sponsored trip. General public welcome.
        • Trip interpreter and Geologist, Bob Raynolds, from the Denver Museum will discuss geology on this learning adventure.

Did you know that you can put your own trip together with as few as four and up to twenty people?  We will handle the rest and all at a great price. We’d also be glad to customize an extended stay onto our fixed-departure tours.

On our Costa Rican multi-sport adventure, you’ll discover tropical jungles, active volcanoes, hot springs, waterfalls, mangrove swamps and miles of solitary beaches, washed by two oceans.  Packed into a small country from the Caribbean coast to the Pacific coast, on our adventure we will hike and ride zip-lines through the jungle; enjoy a jungle boat tour to the canals of Tortuguero; raft the Sarapiqui River through a rain forest; visit Arenal, an active volcanic area; relax in hot springs and enjoy an outrigger sea canoe tour. Oh yes, & there’s time to shop & mingle with the locals. Another highlight of the trip will be the delicious food & gourmet coffee served by the hospitable Costa Rican people. All-inclusive except airfare.  Operated through our sister company, Centennial Adventures.

Did you know Costa Rica has…

        • 850 species of birds, including the resplendent quetzal, scarlet macaw and toucan.
        • 35,000 species of insects, including the morpho butterfly.
        • 160 species of amphibians, including the poison-dart frog.
        • 220 species of reptiles.
        • Marine animals include the leatherback turtle, West Indian manatee, humpback whales and dolphins.
        • Land mammals include the two-toed sloth, giant anteater, armadillo, spider monkey, howler monkey, jaguar and ocelot.

The scenery in Costa Rica is spectacular and life forms are diverse from curious monkeys to industrious leaf-cutter ants; from birds, butterflies and beetles in rainbow colors, to the slow moving sloth.  With so much to see and so many places to explore, we are never surprised when people come back for this eco-adventure again and again.
