Trip Overview

This spectacular canyon country of the Colorado Plateau, including Ruby and Horsethief Canyons, features majestic walls of red sandstone and offers some of the best Colorado canoeing and Colorado sea kayaking. The river is gentle with occasional small Class I+ rapids to add spice to the journey (Class I is easy and Class V is difficult). Roads do not bound this portion of the river and the steep-walled canyons are accessible only from the river, giving the area a true wilderness setting.

You’ll be amazed at stands of shiny granite sculpted by water through the ages while paddling or floating in your life jacket past the remnants of ancient metamorphic rock, called Black Rock. Camping along the river’s banks and exploring a deep box canyon will leave you awed by the immensity of geologic time and the silence of the wilderness. This is BIG COUNTRY and a geologist’s paradise. Many of our educational classes focus on this area. This stretch of river near Grand Junction, CO, can accommodate either a canoe trip or sea kayak trip.

Special Information

This is a fund raising trip for the Rock Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (Rock CF).  Your canoe trip hostess will be Emily Schaller.  You can learn more about Emily by visiting www.letsrockcf.org

Today Emily’s battle against this deadly genetic disease is printed in magazines and posted on websites, her greatest victories are raising $150,000 for cystic fibrosis research and securing a sponsorship of $20,000 from New York-based Spin magazine for Rock CF Foundation’s annual benefit concert. Emily teaches parents, patients and audiences in the CF world about the effects of cystic fibrosis and improvements being made to the treatments. Emily has ran over 300 miles and biked over 700 miles and ridden 282 miles from Detroit to Chicago to keep healthy and raise funds for Rock CF. She organizes a annual “Just Let Me Breathe” (JLMB) rock ‘n roll benefit concert. To date the JLMB concert series has raised over $60,000. It’s plain to see, Emily is positive in her crusade. “ I am inspired and motivated to keep plugging away because I know for a fact that the money we raise is indeed helping to improve the lives of cystic fibrosis patients.“

A message from Emily…
I am extremely excited to host the “Rock CF S’more Tasting and Sing Along” canoe trip with Centennial Canoe Outfitters (CCO). Last summer I was lucky enough to go on a 3-day canoe trip with CCO and it was the most fun I’ve had in years! Before leaving the trip I had a lot of planning to do figuring out how I could do all of my breathing treatments, keep my refrigerated meds chilled and get all the calories and fluids I needed to maintain my health. After talking with my CF care center I set up a plan and made it happen. My guides were very accommodating with storing my meds in coolers but the rest was my responsibility. Because it is a canoeing and camping trip out in a remote back country area, it does require some strength and endurance to make everything happen. Paddling, carrying your dry bag full of clothes and meds and helping out with other lifting is all a part of the trip. Some people (CF or not) may not be able to handle the rigors of this trip, so think about your physical ability before deciding if you want to join us for three days of fun! I hope to see you on the river, rocking CF the whole way!!
Rock CF,
Emily”

Because of health risks to people with Cystic Fibrosis, as a policy of the Rock CF Foundation, individuals with CF who have had a positive sputum culture for Burkholderia cepacia complex (B. cepacia) shall not attend this event or other events sponsored by the Rock CF Foundation.
