Immerse yourself in the wild and secluded beauty of the White River Canyon near the CO and UT border. Naturalist and museum educator, Tim Blesse, will be your guide to the wildlife, plants and night skies along the way.  Keep an eye out for wild horse herds, antelope, deer and beaver. In addition to the great fun available to all participating adults, K-12 teachers also have the option of earning 1.5 graduate level re-licensure credits by participating in all naturalist activities. The graduate level credits are free-of-charge, compliments of the museum.

A free pre-trip workshop day at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science on June 11, 2016 (8:30AM-3:30PM) is available to all trip participants but is required for anyone taking the course for credit.  The workshop and trip together will help educators to become nature guides for their students connecting them to their environment in a way that creates an “essential nature literacy” that promotes both cognitive development and responsible citizenship. Workshop activities will revolve around these topics: astronomy, ecology, nature drawing and journaling, anthropology, and plant classification.

When you canoe Utah, you won’t soon forget it. The White River, flowing westward 34 miles from Bonanza, Utah, near the Colorado and Utah border, has been referred to as the best canoeing in Utah. It is certainly the most remote wilderness area of any flat-water river stretch in the West. Few boaters have discovered the wild and secluded beauty of a Utah canoe trip through the White River Canyon. Wildlife abounds, including wild horse herds, antelope, deer and beaver. Fantastic hiking awaits you at the unusual geologic formations of Goblin City (depending on accessibility). Before or after your trip, you may wish to hike into Fantasy Canyon or Devil’s Playground, featuring other unique rock formations. The water on the White River is generally smooth with occasional rapids up to Class I in difficulty. Excellent camping is found in the cottonwood groves along the river.
